The Treatment of Acupuncture for Lumbago

Object:  The object was to compare two different acupuncture systems and strategies on the pathogenesis of low back pain due to kidney deficiency and to figure out which one of the acupuncture systems is more effective than the other.

Method: 1. Sum up the history, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis and therapy research through literature study. 2. Compare the clinical effect of AA (abdominal acupuncture) and GA (general acupuncture) through clinical study, to serve as the reference and guidance for clinical practitioners when dealing with low back pain.

Literature study: Sift out literatures about modern literature and medical articles about TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine), modern medicine, abdominal acupuncture and general acupuncture used on low back pain through searching several databases, such as the pubmed, CJFD, CECDB and so on. Evaluated literature included classical texts starting from Huang Di Nei Jing and other classical books to modern TCM textbooks and teaching materials

Clinical study: The method applied was a clinical observation with 66 kidney deficient patients who are accorded with the inclusive criteria and randomly divided into two groups, 33 patients each. The AA group used Bo’s abdominal acupuncture technique with the acupoints of Shuifen(Ren-9), Qihai(Ren-6), Guanyuan(Ren-4), Qipang(Bo`s abdominal acupuncture point 7) and etc. the GA group used general acupuncture technique with the acupoints of Shenshu(BL-23), Dachangshu(BL-25), Ciliao(BL-32), Weizhong (BL-40) and etc. The patients were treated once a day, every 5 times as a course, and the observation period is one course. Compare the VAS(Visual Analogue Scale/Score) rate of the patients with xlstatand spss as the statistic software to assess the effect of treatment.

Results1. Two group of patients have no statistical significance(p>0.05)comparing gender, age, VAS rate before the first treatment.2.Two group of patients mostly get decrease in VAS, but have no statistical significance(p>0.05)between before first treatment and after first treatment.3.Two group of patients mostly get decrease in VAS, the AA group get a difference with statistical significance(p<0.05)between before first treatment and after fifth treatment while GA group doesn’t have a difference with statistical significance(p>0.05)between before first treatment and after fifth treatment.4.After the fifth treatment, the total effective rate of AA group is 93.94%, the total effective rate of GA group is 84.85%, the difference between has statistical significance(p<0.05).

Conclusion Both acupuncture methods have an impact on pain relief on low back pain due to kidney deficiency. Abdominal acupuncture compared to general acupuncture brings quicker results and long-lasting results.
